Alec's Field

In the centre of the village opposite the pub, the recreation field is well used for football in the winter and cricket in the summer.

The children's play area has equipment for all ages and is very popular.

There is a footpath down the west side which is used by both dog walkers and allotment holders.

Events, car boots and festivals are also held here from time to time.

History of Alec's Field: A story of wonderful friendship and generosity

Alexander (Alec) Richard Adams was born in 1886. He lived at Hope Cottage in Hazelbury Bryan. His Father Arthur, was Senior Steward to Queen Mary and King George and lived mostly in London, only visiting occasionally to see his three sons and ensure they had a good education and learnt the ways of the countryside.

Alec was always playing cricket, even as a young boy. He was an excellent cricketer and a renowned fast bowler. He played in the local village team, made up of the Squire and his 9 sons and Alec. Once he even cycled from Hazelbury Bryan to Bournemouth to see his hero the legendary W.G Grace play!

Later on the family moved to Birmingham and Alec was selected to play for Warwickshire. Unfortunately the First World War intervened and all competitive cricket was postponed. Alec continued to play cricket for Aston Cricket Club and was presented with a cricket ball in 1926 for taking 10 wickets against King’s Heath. He was 40 at the time.

Steve Upshall also grew up in Hazelbury Bryan, in abject poverty. Alec took him under his wing, helping him with the garden, teaching him to how to grow fruit and vegetables, as well as tending to small animals they all had in those days. He would buy him boots and clothes in return for help in the garden and doing errands. He talked to Steve and helped with his education, ensuring he was literate.

Steve Upshall joined a travelling circus/fair and subsequently moved to Ipswich. He worked as a labourer in the building industry and eventually worked his way up to run his own very successful building company.

He remained in touch with Alec up to his death in 1962. He never forgot the kindness Alec showed him when he was a young man.

When a large piece of land became available in the centre of Hazelbury Bryan, Steve heard about this and purchased the land.

He placed covenants on the land to ensure the field was accessible for everyone in the village to enjoy in perpetuity, for both recreation and, with the allotments, for the provision of food.

In recognition of his gratitude to Alec Adams he named the field Alec’s Field.

When the cricket pitch and pavilion were opened in the 1950’s, Alec, his wife Lillian and two daughters, Hazel and Suzette met up with Steve Upshall and his family at the Opening Ceremony. Several hundred people were present at the opening, it was the quite the occasion!

Hazel and Suzette had hoped to attend the opening of the new cricket pavilion. Unfortunately, the pandemic put a stop to this. However, both now in their 80s, they visited the site two years ago. They would like to donate Alec’s cricket ball to the Hazlebury Bryan cricket club as a souvenir, to be put on display in the clubhouse. Both Hazel and Suzette are keen to ensure their father’s legacy continues and have donated £1000 to the cricket club to support promising young players and help provide new equipment for the club.
