It
seems that, a number of Dorset
residents are still having problems with reception of one or more Freeview TV
channels, even after switchover. This
despite the promise made by Ofcom that “if you could receive analogue
programmes before, you will receive digital after switchover” (the west has
already switched over and parts of the North of the county will switch in March
2010).

Callers in
There have recently been attempts by criminals to trick residents out of money or obtain their bank details by pretending to be council officials from North Dorset District Council.
Residents should be aware that if a council officer is going to call on you they will make an appointment and they will always carry and show official identification. The council never sends personal callers to collect money neither does it ever cold call customers to ask for their bank details.
If you are in any doubt as to the identity of a caller who says they are from the council or if they are anyone else you are not expecting you should follow the advice from Dorset Police:
Stop - Before you answer the door, think are you expecting anyone?
Chain - Put the door chain or bar on the door before opening the door and always keep it on when talking to the person on your doorstep. If you can, look through a window to see who is calling.
Check - Ask for and carefully check their identity card. Take the card and close the door leaving the caller on the doorstep. Do not let them in. Do not phone the number on the card as this may be fake. If the caller states they are from the council or other authority, look the phone number up. You will then be able to check the caller is genuine. Take your time. If the caller is genuine they will be happy to wait.
If
you do get any suspicious callers at your door asking to come in, call Dorset
Police on 01202 222 222.
TV is changing in two stages from analogue to digital in our region on March
24th and April 7th
and the BBC has set up the Switchover Help Scheme to assist older and disabled
people make the switch. For many people, television is an important way of
receiving information from the outside world, however, some are going to find it
difficult at switchover time. That’s why it is so important for us to work
closely with other charities and voluntary organisations to make sure everyone
gets the support they need. We would
like to ensure that people who need help are not left with a blank screen at
switchover time.
Although all eligible people will have received the information, often people
need to hear about things from more than one place before they take action. Many
people who could benefit from the Help Scheme are amongst the most vulnerable in
society. Your organisation is a trusted source of information.
You and your staff deal with those who might need help on a daily basis
and these people may turn to you for advice. We would like to work with you to
ensure those who need it, have the relevant information about switchover and how
to get help.
We would like to brief you so you can pass on the message about where to go for
help, and invite you to one of our events at The Exchange, Sturminster
Newton. This session will
provide you with the right information and advice to make the switch to digital.
There is no charge. Just book
your place by responding to this email and confirm which time you would like to
attend on Monday 8th February 2010 (afternoon or evening).

DORSET INTERNET SAFETY DAY 2010
Parents, carers and children are to take part in an event aimed at raising awareness about ways to protect children when they use computers.
Schools in Dorset have been invited to a day-long session which will include interactive internet safety presentations about "Cyberbullying".
Those who take part in the police-backed scheme will also learn how to create safe social networking sites.
The event will take place at Poole's Children's Centre next Saturday.
Chief Inspector Dave Cregg, from Dorset Police, who is one of the presenters, said: "Criminal activity in relation to the internet is a growing problem.
I want to make parents aware of the potential risks attached to the internet and give them information they need to help safeguard their children."The scheme, organised by Dorset's Safe School and Communities team, is supported by Bournemouth Borough Council, Borough of Poole and Dorset County Council.
Safeguarding children on line is increasingly becoming more high profile, you may have seen cases in the media of cyber bullying and grooming. If you would like to learn more about this topic, and how we can help children and young people to stay safe when using the internet, you might like to attend one of the public events on 6th February at Weymouth or 13th February at Poole.
