A fund exclusively available to communities in rural Dorset has been revived for 2010 by Artsreach as it celebrates its 20th anniversary year.

The Dorset Rural Fund offers grants of between £100 and £500 to support new creative arts projects and activities in rural areas of Dorset, and is supported by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

For the Dorset Rural Fund, Artsreach is advised by a locally-based independent panel, which takes a very broad view of creative activity, but is particularly keen to assist projects which reflect the concerns, interests and identity of the community applying. This is a fund for people living in rural areas, which aims to touch upon rural issues and experiences.

For a Dorset Rural Fund application form call 01305 269512.

DORSET CRIMEBEAT

Dorset Crimebeat helps put ideas into action and can make available a grant of up to £500 – interested, then please read on.

‘Dorset Crimebeat’, pa rt of LV = Streetwise, is a charity that gives money to young people who have a good idea about how to improve their community. Dorset Crimebeat enables young people to pa rtici pa te on issues that are of direct concern to them and will support projects which positively im pa ct their Dorset community. The strength of Dorset Crimebeat is in providing a financial incentive for young people to produce and put into effect their own ideas of how to make their community a safer and better place to live whilst promoting a positive image of young people. Dorset Crimebeat also acts as a focus for the talents and expertise of so many different people in the County who have an involvement in these matters.

The scheme empowers young people, with the right adult/professional support, to foster community safety, and encourages them to become responsible members of their community with a positive contribution to make. Dorset Crimebeat offers a great chance for young people between the ages of 5 and 25 to show what they can do and how their project can help them and others in their area. Crimebeat gives young people the financial incentive to put into effect their own ideas on how to make their community safer. We invite any local young people with a project idea to contact us and start making a difference.

The Dorset Crimebeat Scheme can make available a grant of up to £500 to assist in setting up a project, or can operate a competition with prize money available to the winning groups. All Dorset Crimebeat projects are championed by the High Sheriff of the County, who each year is invited to submit one project to the National Crimebeat Awards.

If you wish to find out more about Dorset Crimebeat, or if you wish to download an application form then please visit www.dorsetcrimebeat.org.uk .  Additionally, you could contact Lynette Weedon the Dorset Crimebeat Co-ordinator on 01202 593333, or by email on lynette@streetwise.org.uk .

The New Plan for North Dorset

The New Plan for North Dorset sets out an overall vision for the District and how places within it should develop over the next 20 years.  It draws on the consultation exercises undertaken in 2005 and 2007, the Council’s own Corporate Plan, the broader agenda set by the revised Sustainable Communities Strategy for Dorset and considers the visions from each of the four Community Action Plans that cover the District.

The New Plan sets out the strategic objectives for North Dorset.  The objectives relate to thriving market towns; sustainable rural communities; protecting and managing the built and natural environment; meeting the District’s housing needs; and improving the quality of life.

Soldiers of the Rifles Regiment are granted the freedom of Poole.

The Borough of Poole honoured the regiment, formed when the Devonshire and Dorset Light Infantry merged with three other regiments in 2007.

The new regiment, which is currently serving in Afghanistan, has its headquarters in Winchester, Hampshire.

The mayor of Poole, Councillor the Reverend Charles Meachin, granted the freedom at a special ceremony at the town's civic centre on Friday 19th March.  Poole first honoured the Dorset Regiment in 1946, before extending this to the Devonshire and Dorset Light Infantry in 1976.

  Dorset Broadcasting Action Group

It seems that, a number of Dorset residents are still having problems with reception of one or more Freeview TV channels, even after switchover.   This despite the promise made by Ofcom that “if you could receive analogue programmes before, you will receive digital after switchover” (the west has already switched over and parts of the North of the county will switch in March 2010).

The Dorset Broadcasting Action Group (DorBAG – supported by the County Council, & and other bodies in Dorset , has created a “TV Reception Problem Report” for residents to complete and return to DorBAG.    DorBAG, Chaired by Oliver Letwin MP and Jim Knight MP will, once they have enough solid data, approach the heads of the appropriate Broadcasting Authorities to seek a solution to viewers’ problems.

Bogus Callers in North Dorset

There have recently been attempts by criminals to trick residents out of money or obtain their bank details by pretending to be council officials from North Dorset District Council.

Residents should be aware that if a council officer is going to call on you they will make an appointment and they will always carry and show official identification. The council never sends personal callers to collect money neither does it ever cold call customers to ask for their bank details.

If you are in any doubt as to the identity of a caller who says they are from the council or if they are anyone else you are not expecting you should follow the advice from Dorset Police:

Stop - Before you answer the door, think are you expecting anyone?

Chain - Put the door chain or bar on the door before opening the door and always keep it on when talking to the person on your doorstep. If you can, look through a window to see who is calling.

Check - Ask for and carefully check their identity card. Take the card and close the door leaving the caller on the doorstep. Do not let them in. Do not phone the number on the card as this may be fake. If the caller states they are from the council or other authority, look the phone number up. You will then be able to check the caller is genuine. Take your time. If the caller is genuine they will be happy to wait.

If you do get any suspicious callers at your door asking to come in, call Dorset Police on 01202 222 222.
